The fighter planes would only meet us at the coast as we approached it and would take us in a ways till they had to return for refueling. On a mission such as the one to Biarritz they would be there for the whole time and would return to the ocean area with us. On a long raid the initial fighter cover would stay as long as they could and then head home and would be replaced by the longer range fighters who would take us in to their limit and then also would return home. The P38s were the short range ones usually, then the P47s would show up and take us in further to the end of their range, then the P51s would show up for the flight over the target area and also take us part of the way home. Then they would leave us and the P47s would show up and escort us back most of the way to the coast and then the P38s would show up for the rest of the trip to the ocean.

Once back over water we were left alone for the rest of the trip, unless a sneaky M109 decided to take us on for a little fight. Not very often, though. And the fighters did not escort us from our forming area over the Wash. We were alone till we headed in to the coast.
