What Melvin took for “boats dock along the coast shooting at us”, were in fact German flack “Tobruks” shooting from the top of the cliff bordering the sea.

TOBRUKS

NB
Melvin Kenyon and the Listing of the pilots and planes of the 458ème GB who took part in the raid on Biarritz, do not seem to agree. The first, "TAIL WIND" - # 41-29359, was Pilot - Maurice Bittler with crew # 61 of the 755 squadron, (himself being the bomber) while according to the second, its is the 1Lt. Kenneth C Barton and crew # 45 of the 754ème squadron which would have been the Pilot.

I think Melvin Kenyon is right because, according to USAF Serial Number Search Results "TAIL WIND" - # 41-29359 (458th BG, 755th Sqd) was lost on August 5, 1944.

"TAIL WIND" was thus well 755ème squadron and not of the 754ème. The plane of the 1Lt Kenneth C Barton entered in collision with B-17 and was lost at the time of the setting in formation on May 25, 1944.
